Company: STATISTISK SENTRALBYRÅ AVD OSLO

Country: Norway

Type: Hybrid remote

Employment: Full-time

Description:

What if your job was to ensure that the whole of Norway finds, understands and can trust the same numbers - at a time when everyone asks an AI for answers?

Common facts are the foundation of Norwegian democracy and give us a common starting point for discussions and decisions. But the way people look for facts is about to change completely. More and more people are asking ChatGPT or another AI instead of browsing a table. It is then crucial that the answer comes from the real numbers - the conclusion from Statistics Norway - and not from a guess. This is where you come in.

We are now rebuilding the Statistics Bank and our entire dissemination platform: cloud-native, modern and scalable. The goal is that people should be able to easily find, understand and use reliable data - and that far more public enterprises can use the Statistics Bank. Our aim is to launch it as a national joint component for all official statistics in Norway.

Almost everything we create must be open source, and we work closely with the statistics agencies in Sweden, Finland, Denmark and other countries.
Our developer platform is NAIS from NAV, and our data platform is based on open source code developed by the French statistics agency. Over a hundred organizations already use our statistics banking solution. There is a lot of collaboration and innovation here, which you will get straight into, for one of up to five new positions.

That is why we are looking for you who have recently graduated or have a few years behind you - and who want to learn a lot, quickly, together with experienced people.

Tasks

You will be part of an interdisciplinary product team with developers, product owner, architect and designer. You get a sponsor and good onboarding, and we don't expect you to know everything from day one. In this position, we emphasize personal qualities and motivation. If you can code and want to learn, we'll teach you the rest.

You can expect a varied everyday life where you:

  • Code and deliver new functionality together with the team - front-end in React/TypeScript, back-end and API in Python/C#/.NET/TypeScript, and Python for data, search and AI
  • Contribute to one of our products - from semantic search and AI access to metadata systems, visualization and the migration of The statistics bank for the cloud
  • Get to know our cloud platform in GCP and how we work according to DevOps principles
  • Learn to write neat and testable code, and get concrete feedback in code reviews
  • Work openly and share knowledge: issues, pull requests and joint further development with developers in SSB and the entire Nordic region
  • Have time set aside every week to build expertise
Personal qualities
  • You are professionally curious and testing things out on your own
  • You take initiative, even when the task is not completely chewed
  • You speak up when you're stuck, instead of digging in for two days
  • You tolerate your code being picked apart in a code review - and get better from it
  • You explain what you've done so that others understand, and help when someone else is stuck fixed
    Qualifications

    Requirements

    • Bachelor's or Master's degree in programming, computer science or equivalent. Relevant practical experience can compensate for the education requirement.
    • You can code. You have a good understanding of at least one programming language, and know what separates neat code from messy code.
    • You speak Norwegian well, verbally and in writing, and have good English skills.

Must have - the more, the better (no one is expected to have everything)

    • Practical experience with coding TypeScript and React, Python and/or C#/.NET
    • Experience with Git and code collaboration (pull requests, code reviews)
    • Practical experience of running code on cloud platforms (preferably GCP)
    • Interest in search technology, AI/machine learning or universal design
    • Experience from open source code, regardless of scope

You do not need to have worked as a developer before. Study projects, hobby projects, contributions to open source code, internships or summer jobs can also count positively.

    Why you should choose us

Work somewhere where you contribute to solving an important societal mission, while at the same time you get to work in an exciting technical environment! As an employee at Statistics Norway, you get to work with competent professionals in an organization that has great trust among the population and among decision-makers.

We have good opportunities for professional development. We believe in active employeeship where we take responsibility for our own development and learning in close collaboration with good colleagues and managers. We set aside time every week to work on competence building and sharing, we arrange hackathons, meetups, monthly demos and much more because we want to learn from each other. We go to great lengths to ensure that teams and developers can design their own working day.

For us, a good balance between work and leisure is important. You get flextime, paid overtime and summer time in the period 15 May to 14 September inclusive. Everyday life at SSB is hybrid and flexible. We believe that you, who are closest to the tasks, know best how they should be solved, both from your home office and in modern premises in Kongsvinger or Oslo.

    In addition, we offer:
Job as a first consultant in a salary range of NOK 650,000–750,000, depending on qualifications
    Active welfare and sports associations
Opportunity for one hour of training a week during working hours, with a training room in office premises.
Membership of the State Pension Fund, which means you get one of Norway's best pension schemes and the opportunity to apply for a home loan with favorable conditions

    Worth noting before you apply
In order for us to be able to evaluate your application as best as possible, we need you to register relevant documentation in the electronic application portal (certificates, diplomas, etc.) before the application deadline. For candidates that we are considering hiring, we can carry out background checks and checks of documentation.

When you apply for a job with us, your name will be visible on a public applicant list, but it is only available to those who request access to it. It is possible to be excluded from this applicant list. In that case, you must justify why you wish to be exempted. We will then decide whether we can grant your request. If we can't do that, you will of course hear from us.

SSB must be a good place to work for everyone, and we want employees with different skills, subject combinations, life experience and perspectives to solve the tasks of the future. If you have a disability, an immigrant background, or have had a long absence from work, education or training in recent years, we would encourage you to tick this when you apply for the position. It gives you the opportunity to get preferential treatment. We invite at least one qualified applicant from each of these groups to an interview. If you need special arrangements, we will go to great lengths to accommodate your needs.

We want you to feel confident in your choice when you agree to work at SSB. If you are suitable for the position, we offer you a reverse reference check. This means that you can contact some of our employees and ask any questions you wish to find out better whether we are a good match.
