Company: MAIA

Country: Worldwide

Type: Remote

Employment: Unbefristeter arbeitsvertrag

Description:

What it's about

MAIA is an AI platform for companies. With MAIA, teams search their internal data and embed agents deep into their processes. We support companies in using AI not only in individual departments, but throughout the entire company.

Technically, this means: We build a GenAI application with our own agent systems, RAG pipelines and agent-based workflows, connect our customers' external systems and analyze their data. We use the best available models, operated in the EU, and make them reliable for demanding work with large, complex amounts of data.

Numerous industrial companies have been working intensively with MAIA for years. After our successful financing round in 2026, we are now bringing MAIA into the mainstream. MAIA has been developed in Leipzig since 2021.

What you do with us

As a lead AI engineer, you lead our engineering team, develop around three quarters of your time yourself and work closely with our CTO.

Your focus:

  • Develop yourself. You take on demanding features and architecture topics in our agent, RAG and workflow systems write plans that others follow.

  • Technical direction. You make important design decisions, prioritize the technical roadmap together with the CTO and drive the technical vision of MAIA.

  • Lead the team. You coordinate the work in the team and are a sparring partner for all engineers, in design discussions, reviews and feedback. You conduct technical interviews and help decide who we hire.

  • Become better, together. With the team, you continually improve how we develop, especially in agentic work: from plans and reviews to evals and releases.

  • On the cutting edge of technology. You follow new developments in LLMs, retrieval, agents and beyond, and evaluate them soberly and bring into the product what is effective.

What we are looking for

  • An outstanding AI engineer. You have built LLM systems and operated them in production. You know RAG, embeddings, vector search, tool calling and agents from practice, including the places where they fail. You try out new models and techniques on your own initiative and separate substance from hype.

  • Strong architecture. You have built, delivered and operated backend systems in production over a long period of time. You make design decisions that will still be effective in a year and recognize weak architecture even when a coding agent wrote it.

  • Very good in at least one of our languages. TypeScript, Python or Go, preferably one of the statically typed ones. You don't have to bring all three with you. You will familiarize yourself with the others.

  • Technical leadership. You have led a team as a tech lead, lead engineer or in a comparable role. What the role was called is secondary. You hand over responsibility and are happy when the team makes good decisions without you. At the same time, you like to develop yourself further, because this role is not just a management role.

  • Measuring instead of assuming. You know how to test and evaluate systems that do not always answer the same question in the same way. You build the simplest solution that solves the problem. Further retrieval stages, prompt chains or abstractions are only added when measurements justify them.

  • Work agentically. Coding agents are part of your everyday life. You have a clear opinion on how a team can stay fast without losing quality.

  • Lead remotely. You lead effectively even from a distance. You communicate proactively, make decisions comprehensible in writing and are easy to reach for the team.

  • Think about security. Our customers trust us with their internal knowledge. Client separation, access rights and secure development are a given for you.

  • Communicate clearly. You address problems early, argue with evidence and explain technical decisions clearly, within the team as well as to product management, customer success and sales. You speak German and English very confidently.

Working at MAIA

We share a common goal: building a really good product. Everyone takes responsibility for their own topic. We enjoy our work and are proud of what our customers achieve with MAIA. The paths are short and decisions are made quickly. In the engineering team, we critically question how we develop and continually improve our processes, especially in agentic development.

A large part of the team works together in our office in Leipzig, centrally between the city center and the zoo, and cooks together almost every day. You work remotely from anywhere in Germany, your place of residence must be in Germany. We meet twice a year for team events, and every now and then there are team days in Leipzig. You decide when your day begins.

  • Access to current Frontier models and coding agents

  • Support with further training, including on leadership topics

  • Access to a Wellpass membership

Remuneration

The annual gross salary is between €90,000 and €100,000. We will discuss where you fall in this range after the interview on technology and leadership at the latest. There is also virtual participation via our VSOP.

Application and next steps

You do not need a cover letter. Send us your CV and answer a question in a few sentences of your own: Why do you want to help shape MAIA?

We work with AI every day. But your own perspective counts for this answer. So please write it yourself, preferably briefly and without polish.

If it fits, this will be followed by a 30-minute get-to-know-you session, a 90-minute interview on technology and leadership and a final discussion with the management. After each step, you will usually hear from us within two working days. Our goal is to make a decision in around three weeks.

We look forward to receiving your application.
