Company: STATISTISK SENTRALBYRÅ AVD OSLO

Country: Norway

Type: Hybrid remote

Employment: Full-time

Description:

What if your job was to ensure that the whole of Norway finds, understands and can trust the same numbers - at a time when everyone asks an AI for answers?
Common facts are the foundation of Norwegian democracy and give us a common starting point for discussions and decisions. But the way people look for facts is about to change completely. More and more people are asking ChatGPT or another AI instead of browsing a table. It is then crucial that the answer comes from the real numbers - the conclusion from Statistics Norway - and not from a guess. This is where you come in.

We are now rebuilding the Statistics Bank and our entire dissemination platform: cloud-native, modern and scalable. The goal is that people should be able to easily find, understand and use reliable data - and that far more public enterprises can use the Statistics Bank. Our aim is to launch it as a national common component for all official statistics in Norway.

On the new platform we are building a completely new generation of dissemination services. One of them is SSB Faktasøk, a semantic search that understands what people are really wondering about - if you search for "price rise", you will find "consumer price index". We also facilitate our data for AI, including through MCP servers, so that AI tools can get the numbers directly from the source instead of guessing. And we start with the SSB assistant, an agent engine that reads the tables, calculates the changes and responds in seconds – always with a source and calculation.

For SSB, it is not enough that the answer is approximately correct. We cannot live with an AI missing the CPI or the price of salmon - it is precisely the trust that the numbers are correct that is our entire value. We don't put our name on something we can't vouch for.

At the same time, we make Statistics Bank a far more visual product, with graphs and interactive visualizations that make the numbers understandable to more people.
Almost everything we create is open source, and we work closely with the statistical agencies in Sweden, Finland, Denmark and other countries. Our developer platform is NAIS from NAV, and our data platform is based on open source code developed by the French statistics agency. Over a hundred organizations already use our statistics bank solution.
We are now hiring up to ten new developers, from fresh to experienced. In a world characterized more and more by AI, we depend on good developers.

Would you like to help ensure that reliable figures from Statistics Norway are available where people are actually looking?

Tasks

You will be part of an interdisciplinary product team with developers, tech lead, product owner, architect and designer. As a senior developer, you code yourself, while also having a responsibility that extends beyond your own keyboard.

You develop:

  • You write code and deliver quality. The languages that remain with us are Python, TypeScript and C#, with more.
  • You take ownership of one or more subject areas or components, from idea to production and further into management.
  • You handle large amounts of data in a smart way, and build for scale and performance.

You take responsibility:

  • You make technical decisions within your area and justify them - in dialogue with the tech lead and architect.
  • You are responsible for the stable and safe operation of the team's services, which run on NAV's NAIS and in GCP according to DevOps principles. You build it, you operate it.
  • You make sure that technical debt is paid off, not just built on.

You lift others up:

  • You are a supporter the team can lean on, and are happy to share your experiences.
  • You are a sponsor and professional guide for less experienced developers, and provide thorough code reviews.
  • You share knowledge in SSB through demos, meetups and professional forums.
Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in programming, computer science or equivalent. Relevant work experience can compensate for the education requirement.
  • Solid experience (3+ years) in developing and operating modern IT systems in production, in a team. You write neat, testable code that is easy to maintain, and have good expertise in API design.
  • Good experience with modern front-end or back-end development. We mostly build with Python, TypeScript and C#.
  • Good experience with cloud services. We run our solutions in GCP, mainly on NAV's NAIS platform.
  • You are comfortable making technical decisions, justifying them and arguing for them when there is disagreement - and accepting it when the choice is different.
  • You have a good command of Norwegian, both verbally and in writing. You will discuss complex solutions and work closely with many people in SSB.
  • Good English skills. We work closely with sister organizations in the Nordics and have users all over the world.

Must have – the more, the better (no one is expected to have everything):

  • Experience in modernizing or migrating systems in operation, without the users noticing
  • Experience in handling large amounts of data
  • Experience with search technology and semantic search
  • Experience with metadata systems
  • Experience with AI/machine learning, and with preparing data for AI
  • Experience in guiding and lifting less experienced developers
  • Knowledge of open source code as a way of working – our entire platform is an open source project
  • Knowledge of universal design, so that we build solutions that can be used by everyone
Personal characteristics
  • You are professionally curious and like to learn, test new technology and find smart solutions.
  • You take initiative, drive the work forward and get things done.
  • You explain difficult things simply - preferably with a drawing on the blackboard.
  • You share knowledge and lift people around you, even when it is not on your own to-do list.
  • You are pragmatic and can tolerate adjusting the course when necessary.
Why should you choose us?

Work somewhere where you contributes to solving an important social mission, while at the same time you get to work in an exciting technical environment! As an employee at SSB, you get to work with competent professionals in an organization that has great trust among the population and among decision-makers.

We have good opportunities for professional development. We believe in active employeeship where we take responsibility for our own development and learning in close collaboration with good colleagues and managers. We set aside time every week to work on competence building and sharing, we arrange hackathons, meetups, monthly demos and much more because we want to learn from each other. We go to great lengths to ensure that teams and developers can design their own working day.

For us, a good balance between work and leisure is important. You get flextime, paid overtime and summer time in the period 15 May to 14 September inclusive. Everyday life at SSB is hybrid and flexible. We believe that you, who are closest to the tasks, know best how to solve them, both from your home office and in modern premises in Kongsvinger or Oslo.

In addition, we offer:
Job as a senior advisor in the salary range NOK 850,000-1,000,000, depending on qualifications. If you are particularly well qualified, a higher salary can be considered.
Active welfare and sports associations.
Opportunity for one hour of training a week during working hours, with a training room in the office premises.
Membership in the Norwegian State pension fund, which means you get one of Norway's best pension schemes and the opportunity to apply for a home loan with favorable conditions.

Worth noting before you apply:
In order for us to assess your application as best as possible, we need you to register relevant documentation in the electronic application portal (certificates, diplomas, etc.) by the application deadline.

When you apply for a job with us, your name will be visible on a public applicant list, but it is only available to those who request access to it. It is possible to be excluded from this applicant list. In that case, you must justify why you wish to be exempted. We will then decide whether we can grant your request. If we can't do that, you will of course hear from us.

SSB must be a good place to work for everyone, and we want employees with different skills, subject combinations, life experience and perspectives to solve the tasks of the future. If you have a disability, an immigrant background, or have had a long absence from work, education or training in recent years, we would encourage you to tick this when you apply for the position. It gives you the opportunity to get preferential treatment. We invite at least one qualified applicant from each of these groups to an interview. If you need special arrangements, we will go to great lengths to meet your needs.

We want you to feel confident in your choice when you agree to work at SSB. If you are suitable for the position, we offer you a reverse reference check. This means that you can contact some of our employees and ask any questions you wish to find out better whether we are a good match.
