Welcome those who apply for an intermediate 40% position as a scientific assistant at the NONMANUAL project at the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies. Appointment to the position is for the term period 01.11.2026-31.12.2027. Start of the position is 01.11.2026 or by agreement.


About the institute

LLE has around 80 scientific employees, 17 administrative employees, around 40 PhD candidates and 13 postdoctoral fellows. The department covers five subjects: general literary studies, digital culture, classical subjects, art history, Nordic literature, language and subject didactics, Norse philology, Norwegian as a second language, linguistics and theater studies.


About the project

The NONMANUAL project studies facial expressions, body and head movements in five different sign languages, using large datasets, machine vision and advanced statistical analysis. The project is financed by the ERC Starting Grant to Vadim Kimmelman, 2023-2027.

Work assignments
  • Writing programs in Python to test and calibrate computer vision (Computer Vision) solutions for the analysis of sign language, especially for the analysis of head movements and eyebrow movements.
  • Learning neural network models for the same tasks.
  • Data curation and processing for videos and other types of data.
  • Writing other programs for technical tasks in the project.
  • Study of literature on relevant topics.
  • Some practical/organizational tasks.
  • Other tasks in the project after agreement.

Qualifications and personal characteristics:
  • You must have a BA in computer science, machine learning or another relevant subject area.
  • You must have good knowledge of Python.
  • Good knowledge of machine learning/deep learning is a major advantage. 
  • Work experience related to the tasks in the position, such as testing and calibrating CVs, learning models, data curation especially for sign language video data, is an advantage.
  • You must have good English skills, as the project is international.
  • You must be tidy and accurate and able to handle large amounts of information.
  • You must have an interest in computer vision and personal motivation for the position.

Applicants who have previously been employed in a scholarship position or have obtained equivalent competence, cannot be appointed to the position.

Employment to the position requires that one has a workplace at the University of Bergen. It is required that you follow the guidelines that apply to the position at any time.

  • Salary as a scientific assistant, which currently corresponds to a gross annual salary of NOK 525,000 in a full-time position for those with a master's degree (code 1020) and a gross annual salary of NOK 470,200 in a full-time position for those with a bachelor's degree (code 1019). For particularly qualified applicants, it may be appropriate to consider a higher salary.
  • Membership in Statens pensjonskasse, which means a secure service pension scheme, the possibility of disability and survivors' pensions, as well as access to favorable housing loans.
