Description:

We are looking for an experienced and structured development engineer for the engine process and systems department. The department is responsible for the development and optimization of engine properties related to performance and emissions. This involves process responsibility for systems within air, exhaust, fuel, combustion, cooling and lubrication for both gas and diesel engines. In addition, the department has component responsibility for central parts such as turbochargers, fuel injection systems and exhaust aftertreatment equipment. The department's work includes thermodynamic analyzes and flow calculations using simulation and modeling tools, as well as the specification, implementation and evaluation of test programs. The department also works closely with sales support and the project organisation. The test laboratory is also part of our department. Here, tests are carried out on development engines to simulate various operating conditions, as well as the development and verification of new engine variants.

The engineers have a close relationship with the product and can closely follow the process from the concept stage to the finished solution for the customer. Bergen Engines is part of Norway's most important industries for the future with a key role in the transition to carbon-neutral energy production. You will have a central role in emission certification of our marine diesel and gas engines according to international regulations such as US EPA and IMO NOx. The position also involves development, testing and analysis of the engines' emission characteristics.

This position will involve the following tasks:

  • US EPA certification of diesel and gas engines (United States Environmental Protection Agency)
  • IMO NOx certification of diesel and gas engines
    • Interpretation of regulations, NOx Technical Code.
    • Document responsibility for the engines' emission technical specification, "Technical File" (creating new ones and maintaining existing ones).
  • Be a professional resource in exhaust emissions, emission measurements and methods for emission control.
  • Develop and maintain models for calculating emissions for various gas specifications and operating conditions.
  • Specify, plan, follow up and analyze results from engine trials and other relevant tests.
  • Technical coordination and cooperation with suppliers.
  • Root cause analysis in case of component or system failure.
  • Technical support for other functions in the company.
  • Assist in other areas of responsibility according to interest, ability and the company's needs.

 

Qualifications and experience

Education and experience

  • Master's degree in engineering or equivalent technical competence.
  • Relevant experience in engine development, emission certification or equivalent technical work is an advantage.
  • Experience with data analysis.

Technical competence

  • Good understanding of the internal combustion engine's structure and operation.
  • Good knowledge of exhaust emissions, emission measurements and methods for emission control.
  • Motivated for and able to keep up to date with comprehensive technical regulations.
  • Good system understanding and ability to collaborate across disciplines.

Tools and programming

  • MS Excel.
  • Desirable with programming skills (Python and/or MATLAB) for further development and automation of methods.

Language

  • Fluent English skills, both written and spoken.
  • For candidates whose mother tongue is not Norwegian, a language level equivalent to passing "Norwegian course intermediate level, independent user (B1)" is required within the probationary period, and a sufficient level for daily use in everyday work.
